I woke slowly, my limbs heavy like I’d slept a long time. Holly lay next to me, not looking at me, but awake. I was relieved she wasn’t staring, that would have been sort of creepy. Still, her eyes were sad. I could see that in the setting sunlight pooling in the room. I’d slept all day. I didn’t know about her.

It was the sadness that had me reaching for her. It was so weird. I didn’t give a shit about other people’s feelings, but all I wanted to do was soothe her. She came with a sigh and pressed her forehead against my chest.

“Hi,” she whispered. I loved that she did that, as though she understood the importance of keeping the moment quiet. “Sleep okay?”

“I did, how about you?”

She nodded. “I did. I’ve only been up a little while. I think we must have both heard the same car alarm and woken up a little bit.”

“Hmmm.” I kissed her forehead and then paused. Was that too much? Well, she wasn’t running from the bed. That was a good thing. “I promised you dinner, and I will deliver that promise. Just give me a second. This feels a little bit like a dream. Like I’m not really lying here with you, like I’m going to wake up and be in the break room at work.”

She shook her head and then kissed me. Her lips were smooth, and her body so warm and curvy against my own. I’d thought the kiss in the diner was the best of my life. I was wrong. It was right fucking then.

“What are you doing to me, Charlie?” It was my question from earlier. “How am I this person when I’m around you?”
